Share your thoughts... why are certain things so ridiculously overpriced?
Here is a quote from a book I'm using as research for a term paper:
"The magic of property turns sand into gold." - Arthur Young.
Anyone else agree with the concept this quote is trying to bring to light?
(and just in case some of you can't figure out what context it's being used in, the quote is trying to say that brands, names, and demands (magic of property) are what turn ordinary things (sand) into must have items (gold). An obvious example would be the way certain women's purses and bags cost as much as a mid-size car. They're just popular because we say so and not because they're actually worth more than a handbag found on a rack at Target).
Absolutely, its all about someone deciding something is valuable and then everyone jumps on the band wagon and wants it too.
Many scifi books were about people who had diamonds or gold just lying around on the ground but nobody used them for anything, thusly they had no value to the society.
What is this deal with purses anyways? I own one .. most times I just grab a wallet and go.. maybe I don't see a purse as valuable
